Continuing our efforts to drive towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, Oakville Transit’s transition to an electric bus fleet is underway!
Environmental sustainability is a key strategic priority for the Town of Oakville, as outlined in Council’s Strategic Plan and 2023-2026 Action Plan.
Electric buses added for on demand services in 2023
We received our first 15 electric buses in 2023, which are currently in use for On Demand Services (care-A-van and Ride On-Demand).
The 20-foot Karsan e-Jest electric buses are a European-style, battery-powered bus built by Karsan, a European market leading bus and coach manufacturing company. They are equipped with a BMW power train providing an emission-free range of 210 kilometres and feature a unique and innovative design with low floor, key for accessibility.
Electric buses to be added to conventional routes in 2025
In early 2025, we will be adding 15 larger capacity electric buses added to our fleet and in service for conventional fixed routes.
The new Nova LFSE+ 40-foot large capacity electric buses, manufactured by Nova Bus, will replace 15 diesel-run buses currently in service and will be used for transit’s conventional fixed routes across town. The new buses can travel approximately 350 kilometres on a full charge, with most fixed routes requiring about 225 kilometres of travel in a day.
The difference electric buses make
Electric buses do not produce harmful exhaust emissions or other greenhouse gases (GHG), they are more energy-efficient, quieter, provide a smoother experience for passengers, and use fewer parts than standard diesel buses.
They offer a cost-effective and sustainable choice for public transit systems and will support the town’s climate action efforts to achieve its corporate goal of net zero GHG emissions by 2050.
